Well Below The Withers

Channeling my height when I first fell in love with all things horse; 39 inches + - and five years of age, I set out as an adult to explore horses from their chest height, a perspective typical of a five year old and low enough at which most horses would drop their heads down and reach their long necks far forward to find me. With a short tripod, I decamped into areas of comfort for these massive beasts, watching them for hours just as I did so with much glee,  as a young child. Observing horses in large group barns, in backyard hillsides, in rehabilitation centers and in all night turn out in mid July. These photographs explore horses in their area of comfort, when their inquisitive natures emerges, when play overcomes boredom and they cross over to share a mutual gaze through the black box of my view camera.
